    SimplePractice Alternative for UK Therapists

    NoteSono··Updated

SimplePractice is one of the best-known practice management platforms for therapists in the United States, with deep insurance billing integration. UK therapists often come across it through American colleagues, podcasts and research, and then find that it doesn't map cleanly onto UK private practice.

This guide explains what UK therapists need, where SimplePractice fits and doesn't, and the alternatives for different parts of your practice. We make NoteSono, so weigh our view accordingly.

What SimplePractice is built for, and what it isn't

SimplePractice was designed around US healthcare workflows: insurance billing, superbills, claims and HIPAA. These are useful features for US therapists. For UK therapists in private practice, many of them go unused:

    • UK private practice is mostly self-pay, and SimplePractice's electronic claims work only with US insurers
    • UK therapists work under UK GDPR, not HIPAA
    • SimplePractice stores data in the US, which is an international transfer under UK GDPR
    • Pricing is in USD ($49 to $99 a month), so costs move with the exchange rate
    • Live chat support runs on US Pacific hours, roughly 2pm to 2am UK time on weekdays

    SimplePractice alternatives for UK therapists

UK therapists typically need two kinds of tool: practice management (scheduling, client records, invoicing) and clinical documentation (AI-assisted notes). These can be separate tools or combined.

    For AI clinical notes: NoteSono

NoteSono is a UK-built alternative to SimplePractice Note Taker. You speak or type a post-session summary and get a clinical note in your chosen format to review: SOAP, DAP, BIRP, Narrative and 16 others, 20 in all. No session recording. Notes stored in the EU. ICO registered (ZC045529). NoteSono starts free, with paid plans from £14.99/month.

    For practice management: UK-focused platforms

If you need full practice management, with a client portal, online booking with payment, SMS reminders and secure messaging, look at platforms that serve UK practices. WriteUpp is UK-made and offers an AI Scribe add-on. Jane offers UK pricing and stores UK clinics' data in London, with an AI Scribe add-on. Cliniko prices in USD, says UK accounts' data stays in the UK, and has no native AI. You can use NoteSono for notes alongside any of them.

Do UK therapists need practice management software?

Many UK solo practitioners don't need a full practice management suite. If you:

    • Use a separate calendar or booking tool
    • Invoice through your accounting software or bank
    • Communicate with clients by email or phone
    • Want a dedicated clinical notes app

...then you may not need a full platform. NoteSono Pro also includes a calendar, client booking links, invoicing with online card payment, and CPD tracking, which may be enough for a solo practice.

NoteSono handles the clinical notes with AI assistance, for less than a full practice management suite. Create a free account (free plan, no card needed).

Write your next note from a short summary

NoteSono formats your voice summary into a structured clinical note: SOAP, DAP, BIRP and more. We don't record your sessions.
